Star Trek Into Darkness

Director: JJ Abrams

Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller

Star Trek (2009) successfully tweaked one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time. Star Trek Into Darkness goes a step further and has the potential to envelope even non-trekkies into its fold. It is a high-jinks roller-coaster ride filled with thrills, high octane action and just the right emotional punch to make you queue up for the tickets again. It is a retelling of the Wrath Of Khan (1982) storyline wherein a genetically engineered superhuman from the earth’s past, cryogenically frozen into a space pod, wakes up to wreck havoc all around.

What wows the senses are the visual effects. We have seen the USS Enterprise in action before but in deep space. We have never fully grasped how big and huge it could be. Well, the opening scenes where she rises from the ocean on planet Nibiru and the closing scenes where a damaged Enterprise enters the earth’s atmosphere, present us with the behemoth in full glory. The awesome climax where the rogue ship USS Vengeance crashes into San Francisco and the chase sequence which follows alone is worth the price of the ticket. Did I fail to mention the jaw dropping sequence on Nibiru which depicts scenes from inside an active volcano? This is ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) wizardry at its best. Kudos to all the animators involved.

But it’s just not the visual effects that hook you. The film has real life roots as well. The terrorist attack on the secret service facility and the admiralty command remind you of the actual attacks on Britain’s MI6 headquarters and the Pentagon. And you applaud Captain Kirk’s decision to retaliate with a peaceful solution rather than going after the culprit with all guns blazing. So unlike our real world leaders.

The film takes us further into the Star Trek mythos, giving an insight into the rock solid friendship between Kirk and Spock and teaches us that Vulcans have feelings too. The actors, be it Chris Pine (James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Commander Spock), Karl Urban (Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy), Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, communications officer), Anton Yelchin (Ensign Pavel Chekov, navigator) and Simon Pegg ( Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, second officer and chief engineer) reprise their roles with ease and with familiar eccentricities intact. So be prepared for more inside humour. Alice Eve is a welcome addition as weapons expert Dr. Carol Marcus, who is hinted as being Kirk’s love interest. The film belongs to Benedict Cumberbatch, (Khan), who is fiercely loyal to his other 72 cryogenically frozen colleagues and who would do anything to keep them safe. We empathise with this flawed superman and like to see more of him in future.

A sequel is on the cards as we see a revamped Enterprise all fit and ready for a five year space mission. We can hardly wait to go where no one has gone before once more...

Movie Review: Aurangzeb

Movie Review: Aurangzeb

Director: Atul Sabharwal

Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Prithviraj, Rishi Kapoor, Sasheh Agha, Amrita Singh, Anupam Kher and Sikandar

Boys love to play with guns. So much so, that to satisfy their gun-toting fantasies they can weave silly screenplays into movie projects. Debutant director Atul Sabharwal is guilty of such indulgence. Aurangzeb, with a mammoth dose of testosterone, is a half-baked gangster fantasy. Oh it doesn’t help when the poster of the film promotes Arjun Kapoor as the leading man. But the narrative makes Prithviraj, who plays a cop, the hero. For good measure there are two Arjun Kapoors. Yes there’s the adage, ‘the more the merrier’ but just because there are two avatars of the same actor, doesn’t make him the hero.

Nonetheless, the film uses the story of Aurangzeb (the Mughal Emperor) as a metaphor for gangsta land mythos. The edgy and violent Arjun Kapoor (Ajay) is the son of a feared mafia head. Jackie Shroff as Yashwardhan is that fearful mob boss. His name strikes terror in the hearts of all those who live in Gurgaon. But Yashwardhan is actually a seminal businessman who values his clientele above all. So much so, he has friendly lunches with ordinary farmers and hands them bags full of money. Aren’t dreaded gangsters supposed to steal money? Nevertheless, his totally wonky son Ajay likes to pick a fight and treat women like shit. Amrita Singh plays Leela, Yashwardhan’s business associate with ulterior motives. And you should hear Ajay bad-mouthing Leela on her face. No wonder Delhi has such a bad reputation of being woman unfriendly. The other Arjun Kapoor (Vishal) is put in place of Ajay with the motive of bringing down Yashwardhan’s criminal empire. Sort of like Vibhishan did with Ravana in the Ramayana. Now we’re just mixing metaphors.

Despite not being the ‘technical’ hero of the film, Arjun Kapoor is the best thing about Aurangzeb. His performance in a double role reminds of you all those Amitabh Bachchan movies from the ’80s where Mr Bachchan became a staple action genre favourite. Arjun excels in both the edgy avatar of Ajay and the more resolved and subtle character of Vishal. It’s a pity that the narrative keeps jumping away from his characters’ dramatic arcs. Prithviraj gives a commendable performance as well. He does a good job at masking his South accent but it does show in some places. Rishi Kapoor adds a menacing touch to his role. He’s a good guy and a bad guy and leave it to the veteran actor to ace a complex performance.

Aurangzeb would’ve done well had it built upon the Gurgaon premise. One where a growing city becomes a natural habitat for urban and organised crime. In fact, the movie packs quite a dramatic punch in scenes where the police become the grey force of this story. But right at the end it all goes South. Prithviraj miraculously pulls off a coup where he and the two Arjun Kapoors manage to bump off all the bad guys without even getting seriously injured. Sasheh Agha, the heroine of the movie, is practically nonexistent in the scheme of the film. If she’s the female lead, she should’ve had more to do than just don a bikini and make love to the hero.

Ishkq In Paris Movie Review

Ishkq In Paris Movie Review
Director: Prem Raj

Cast: Preity Zinta, Rhehan Malliek, Isabelle Adjani, Salman Khan (Special appearance) and Shekhar Kapur (Special appearance)

Boy and girl meet. It becomes inevitable that they’ll fall for each other. More so if it’s on the Eurail (Trans-Europe) train. Even more, if the destination is Paris. There’s an affable quality about love stories based in the city of love. No matter how shallow, they endear you and make you want to believe in love. Only a fool would resist the charm of Paris. Je t'aime – they say in that part of the world. But do patrons of Indian Fridays really care about love at Champ de Mars? There’s a gross disconnect.

It’s okay when an Indian love story unfolds at the foot of the Swiss Alps. Case in point Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. But then the location is just the exotic narrative fabric. Not the case with Ishkq In Paris. Here Preity Zinta is supposed to be half French, half Indian. Supposedly she’s lived all her life in Paris. Her Indian father’s left her at the age of seven or so. She’s been brought up single handedly by her French mother Marie and she’s never been to India. It’s not shocking, but rather surprising then that she can have dialogue like, “Tum angrezon ki tarah ticket kata ke bhaag rahe the…”. Of course, we’re in the realms of commercial cinema and such facts are best overlooked.

But then Ishkq In Paris doesn’t give you much to distract from such obvious facts. The entire first half is spent in Ishkq (Zinta) meeting Akash (Rhehan Malliek) over a night in Paris. They buy a dice off Chunkey Pandey and keep rolling it to go to a party, have drinks, watch a movie etc. Thing is nothing ever happens except conversations. Malliek keeps staring at the dice and the side which has sex printed on it. But it never rolls to that eventuality. Instead there’s a lot of half-baked dialogue and while it may be engaging for Ishkq and Akash, it does nothing to pique the audience’s attention. Sadly you realise how pat the rest of the film is when Salman Khan makes an appearance in the song Kudiye di kurti. For five minutes, Ishkq In Paris becomes exciting.

The narrative flaws and love story clichés are only too obvious. They do great disservice to the cast. Preity Zinta, Rhehan Malliek and Isabelle Adjani are all beautiful people. Paris, Lyon and Prague are beautiful places. Zinta and Adjani are proven acting talents too. Put together the audience should’ve had at least a visual treat. Manush Nanadan’s cinematography does have its high points but there’s clear not enough good here to hook even the most besotted Zinta fan. Adjani especially is a phenomenal French actress and boy, are her talents wasted in this film.

Writers Prem Raj and Preity Zinta have watched too much of the Before Sunrise, Before Sunset films. But have failed to realise that the concept doesn’t work that well with Indian characters and sensibilities.
Ironically here’s some trivia that’s far more exciting than the film. Rhehan Malliek is popular TV actor Gaurav Chanana rechristened. Not just that, the director / writer of this film Prem Raj is actually Prem Soni, who made the previously forgettable movie Main Aur Mrs Khanna.

Funny Scene of Go Goa Gone Movie

IPL 2013 MATCH FIXING

On a day of dramatic developments, Sreesanth and his IPL team mates Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan, who were arrested in Mumbai early in the day, were brought to the Saket district court complex with their faces muffled along with 11 Mumbai and Delhi based bookies.
They were produced at the residence of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma inside the Saket court complex and asked to appear one-by-one before him.
Demonstrators burn a poster of S Sreesanth during a protest in AhmedabadThe media was barred from entering the magistrate's residence which was under a thick security blanket.
During the hearing, special cell of Delhi police sought seven days of custodial interrogation of the cricketers and others to unearth the entire conspiracy relating to spot-fixing in three IPL matches involving Rajasthan Royals.
Pubic Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan, appearing for Delhi police, sought police custody of all the accused for confronting them with each other and with electronic evidence, including their laptops, collected during the discreet probe.
The custodial interrogation was required to ascertain, if any, the magnitude of conspiracy, Mohan said adding that the investigators also need to find out the source of money allegedly received by the cricketers for indulging in spot-fixing.
During the arguments, the prosecutor claimed that several other matches in the IPL were also fixed and the accused are required to be interrogated regarding that also.
"Huge amount money is involved in the case," Mohan said.
Seeking seven days remand of all accused, the prosecutor told the court that that there is a "larger conspiracy" in the entire scandal and they need to be probed thoroughly.
The counsel appearing for some of the accused opposed the police plea alleging they are innocent and have been falsely implicated in the case.
The defence counsel alleged foul play and claimed that some other persons are behind the conspiracy.
Sreesanth and two other cricketers were arrested in a post-midnight operation in Mumbai last night by Delhi police for spot-fixing in IPL matches for payments of upto Rs 60 lakhs just for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over.
It said that the cricketers indulged in spot-fixing in at least three IPL matches as per arrangements with bookies who have underworld connections abroad.
The players, who have been suspended by the BCCI, have been booked under section 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
Earlier during the day, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said that the accused are also likely to be booked under the stringent MCOCA, Maharashtra [ Images ] Control of Organised Crime Act, which could land them in jail without bail.
The commissioner listed three Rajasthan Royals' matches -- on May 5, 9 and 15 against Pune Warriors, Kings XI Punjab [Images ] and Mumbai Indians [ Images ] respectively -- where spot-fixing took place.
Advocate Rajiv Shankar Trivedi, appearing for Chavan and Chandila, claimed his clients are innocent.
"The prosecution has shown some evidence. They have claimed they have recovered various mobile phones, laptops, etc from their possession. They have also claimed that money changed hands. We are not seeing any such thing," the lawyer said.
The names of players emerged during the conversations between two bookies and on this basis, the cricketers were implicated in the case, he said.
